Tesla Model Y vs Model Y L: VIN Checks Before Buying Parts

Ordering Tesla parts starts with identifying the vehicle correctly. Model Y and Model Y L (often written as Model YL) should not be treated as interchangeable entries in a dismantling inventory or repair quote. This PartsVolt guide explains how to combine VIN information with the vehicle's seating layout and body specification before selecting replacement parts.

Model Y vs Model Y L: the physical differences

Tesla's current Australian owner's manual lists the following reference dimensions. This comparison applies to the named versions, not every historical Model Y configuration.

Reference specification Model Y Premium (5-seater) Model Y L (6-seater)
Seating layout Two rows, five seats Three rows, six seats
Wheelbase 2,890 mm 3,040 mm
Overall length 4,790 mm 4,969 mm

The listed Model Y L wheelbase is 150 mm longer. Dimensions are approximate and configuration-dependent. Check the manual applicable to the actual vehicle rather than applying these figures to every build. Source: Tesla Australia owner's manual, Dimensions.

What the two example VINs actually tell us

Vehicle sequence numbers are masked here. Under Tesla's published decoding table, both examples have LRW/Y/H/C: Shanghai, Model Y, right-hand-drive five-door MPV, and restraints covering the front row plus three second-row positions. That supports a conventional five-seat configuration.

VIN example Position 7: battery Position 8: drive Position 10: Shanghai production year
LRWYHCFJ2SC****** F: LFP J: single motor, standard S: 2025
LRWYHCEK6TC****** E: ternary lithium-ion K: dual motor, standard T: 2026

Both have C at position 11, indicating Shanghai. Crucially, FJ versus EK identifies battery and drive differences, not a Y-versus-YL rule. Both examples retain C at position 6. The second example therefore does not establish a Model Y L identity. This is a code interpretation, not authentication of either vehicle. Source: Tesla service manual, VIN decoding.

A practical identification check before ordering

  1. Record the complete VIN privately. Compare the vehicle's identification markings with its documents. Resolve transcription errors before searching for parts.
  2. Record the actual seating layout. Photograph all rows. On a dismantled or modified vehicle, missing seats are not evidence of its original specification.
  3. Confirm the exact variant. Reconcile the vehicle record, relevant specifications and physical evidence. If a seller calls it YL but the records conflict, mark the identity as unverified.
  4. Check the required component separately. Record its reference part number, suffix, label photographs, mounting points and connectors. Ask for VIN-specific applicability and any official replacement-number evidence.
  5. Keep donor and recipient records separate. A correctly identified donor still needs a compatibility check against the car receiving the part.

Why identification matters for Tesla repair parts

Do not convert a model-family match into a fitment promise. Seats, restraints, trim, glass and body-related components deserve individual checks, as do electrical assemblies. Tesla publishes a dedicated Model YL right-hand body harness procedure; this illustrates why the applicable service procedure matters, but does not by itself prove that any particular part is interchangeable or incompatible.

For an unresolved match, keep the quote conditional. Request the missing label or catalogue evidence before committing to supply or installation. Similar appearance alone is insufficient.

Safety before inspection or dismantling

This identification guide is not a high-voltage or restraint-system repair procedure. Do not disconnect orange high-voltage wiring, open battery assemblies or disturb airbag and pretensioner circuits to identify a model. Such work requires appropriately trained personnel following the applicable Tesla isolation and service procedures.

Prepare a clearer PartsVolt enquiry

For a PartsVolt Tesla parts enquiry, provide the full VIN privately, the requested component, its reference part number if available, and clear label and vehicle photographs. State whether the vehicle is believed to be Model Y or Model Y L, and flag any conflicting evidence. Better identification helps PartsVolt assess the request; fitment remains subject to verification for the specific vehicle and part.
